Lightstep is an OpenTelemetry-native distributed tracing and observability platform, now branded as ServiceNow Cloud Observability following acquisition. Its API provides access to service performance data, distributed traces, and change intelligence — correlating performance degradations with recent deployments or configuration changes. For agents doing automated performance analysis, the API enables querying service latency percentiles, error rates, and trace samples programmatically.
The API covers streams (saved trace queries), snapshots (trace samples at a point in time), and service metrics. Agents can query the service performance summary, retrieve trace exemplars for specific latency percentiles, and access change correlation data. The OpenTelemetry-native model means trace data from any OpenTelemetry-instrumented service is accessible without vendor-specific SDK installation.
Reliability is vendor-managed for the hosted platform. The transition to ServiceNow Cloud Observability introduces some uncertainty about platform roadmap and API stability — teams building long-term integrations on Lightstep should track the platform direction under ServiceNow's ownership.
Documentation has been partially reorganized following the ServiceNow acquisition. The core tracing and API documentation remains functional for integration work.
