tsup is the default choice for building TypeScript libraries and npm packages. Its zero-config approach means most packages just need tsup in package.json and a minimal config, and it produces CommonJS, ESM, and declaration files correctly. Confidence is docs-derived.
The configuration surface is minimal: entry files, formats (cjs, esm, iife), dts (declaration files), target browser environment, and bundle splitting. esbuild provides fast compilation; tsup adds TypeScript declaration generation and dual CJS/ESM output.
tsup is a local build tool with no platform auth. npm package publishing uses separate authentication (npm tokens or npx publish flows). No external tsup service.
Operationally, tsup builds are very fast due to esbuild. Declaration file generation is separate from the main build (using tsc in the background). Treeshaking is handled by esbuild. The output targets modern Node.js by default.
Documentation at tsup.egoist.dev is concise and covers most common use cases. The majority of library authors find the minimal config sufficient. Developer experience is excellent for TypeScript library development -- tsup has become the standard for publishing typed npm packages.
